Machine Gun Preacher - Life Lessons and Movie Review

Based on a True Story

Machine Gun Preacher Stars Gerard Butler. You may already know him from his stunning performances in movies like 300 or one of my favorites Law Abiding Citizen. His wife is played by Michelle Monaghan which has a long list of films to her credit.

The True Story of Sam Childers

This movie is based on  preacher named Sam Childers. Pastor Sam is trying to save as many kidnapped children in war-torn Sudan as he possibly can. He uses any means necessary to keep these children from being violently forced to become mercenaries slaves. You can read the book or watch the Machine Gun Preacher Documentary

Sex, Drugs, and violence

Sam went from a drug dealing biker to a machine gun preacher. Sex, drugs, and violence are prevalent in the film, but this is an attempt to illustrate Sam's transformation from Drug dealing biker to machine gun preacher.

Life Lessons

There are some lessons we can learn from this film.

 Talk is cheap

Many people like to Monday Morning Quarterback what is going on in the world however Sam Actually does something about it. Sam's personal convictions cause him to pick up arms in actually do something about the evil that is in the world.

Doing right May cost you everything

Sam is fueled by such a strong passion for these children that he lays down his life for these kids. It cost him almost everything. In this film you will see  how he struggled so hard to do the right thing. This movie is a good illustration of walking away from evil.

Even good people occasionally do bad things

Pastor Sam is not be a theological Powerhouse. He has demons from his past revisit him. This makes the movie more down to earth.  Some people paint the gospel as being an unattainable thing, while Pastor Sam illustrates that Jesus can save anyone and turn their lives around.  From, time to time, even good people mess up.

Sometimes you are the only one

In the Bible there are many times prophets were outnumbered by false prophets.  Elijah runs away and cries to the Lord that he feels like he's the only one in the world that actually cares. In this movie, Pastor Sam seems like he's the only one that actually cares for these children.  In spite of feeling this way, Pastor Sam continues to march on for his convictions.

Conclusion

Pastor Sam does not fit the typical model for what we would expect to be a man of God. His character flaws make this movie more believable and down to earth. I highly recommend this film.

***This movie has sex, drugs, and violence in it so be prepared!
